North Anna Power Station

Kenny, Dave, Paul and Mark

DP took this crew out this morning. Here is what he had to say...
Dave's wife booked him a trip for his birthday present, and what a present it was.  We left the marina at 5:45 and looked for fish for about 15 minutes and finally saw a few to set up on.  By 7:45 we had gone through 125 baits and were well on our way to a great day. We went back to High Point to get ice for the fish and for the guys to rest a bit. After catching bait we all had to gather ourselves from a story that was told while I was throwing the net.  Let's just say that Mark got his man card back when one of the guys told us about a "pedi" that he had received  along side his wife. I won't mention who that was but I bet his wife really looks after him on his birthdays.  We set up in another area and caught a few keepers then mostly punks.  Finally, we found a really nice school of fish and set up on them and nearly went through another 80 baits.  By 10:00 we had our limit and called it a day.  Looks like there will be a fish fry for the Delta shift at North Anna Power Station.  Happy Birthday Dave!!!!!!

A Hot Wednesday

Dillon, Tyler and Cory
Sunny and Hot, Water Temperature 87* and Clear
This morning I picked up my clients and went looking for fish. We set up in an area where I knew some fish were working and before we knew it we were taking hits. We caught about 20 fish in our first school but 16 of them were punks. I left them and looked for bigger fish but had difficulty locating schools today. We eventually set up in different areas fishing "spots". We would catch a few here and there and sometimes have constant action. By noon Tyler had caught 11 Stripers and was on a roll. This was his first Striper trip and considering the heat he did exceptionally well. Although I considered today slow there was plenty of action to keep the boys out in 95* heat. I would have loved for them to catch 20 or 30 Stripers each but it just didn't work out that way today. We caught plenty of Catfish and got punked today. This will be a trip they will remember for a long time.

Lowrance Screen Shots

This is a picture I took yesterday morning when I was working a school of Stripers. We had located and set up on them about 10 minutes prior to this picture. We had 8 rods hook up at once but by the time they took the fish off the hook the school had left. I fired the big motor up and went the direction I thought they were heading. About 200 yards away I ran over the school. On the left side of the sonar screen you can see a little motor noise interference [vertical black dashes] because I was running about 25mph. Just as soon as I saw the beginning of the school [ just on top of the ledge, smaller red dots] I put my shifter in neutral and as ran to the front of the boat to put trolling motor in while my clients got up and readied their rods for bait. I baited them, they put them down and 30 seconds later all the rods were hooked up. You can see on the sonar that as the boat slowed the arches got bigger and bigger. I had only slowed down to 1.1 mph but as I slowed even further after I took this shot the screen turned to spaghetti and that is when we hooked up. The sonar page works better than the down scan at speeds in excess of 5 mph as you can see in the picture. Once I slowed down enough the down scan picks up the fish as well as the side scan in the upper blue page. I then used the side scan to stay on the school by turning the boat 90 degrees and I maneuvered the boat in the direction that I saw most of the fish.

I took this picture while I was catching daytime bait. You can see on the sonar page all the Herring between 10 and 20 feet deep. On the history page in the upper part of the sonar page you can also tell how long I had been on the school which was massive, probably about 40 yards wide. The down scan shows the bait as well but is showing more definition. Notice that I can see the individual baits clearly which helps me distinguish what kind of bait it is. The side scan portion of the picture shows how wide the school of bait was and tells me there is more on the left side of the boat than the right so I threw on the left side of the boat and captured enough bait to finish the day.

My journal shows a lot of pictures of Stripers but my Lowrance is the main tool I use in locating bait and fish to put my clients on. I have used Lowrance for over 40 years, always catching plenty of fish, but this technology and understanding how to use it and how to interpret what I see is one reason why we consistently put our clients on fish. If I could just get them to listen to me when a fish gets on my life would be a whole lot better. If you enjoy my posts of Lowrance shots let me know and I will continue to post them. If you have a Lowrance and have a question about it email me and I will try to help you. One of my guides Anthony Hicks and myself are Pro Staff Navico, which Lowrance is part of. If you want to learn more about reading and understanding Lowrance , consider booking a trip. When you leave at the end of the day you will know your depthfinder, how to locate, set up and catch fish and also have torn up thumbs from taking fish off the hook.
Fishing is fun, Catching is the Bomb!

Another Great Morning

Sky and Tony

Sunny and Warm, Water Temperature 86* and Clear
Tony and I both had charters today so we caught bait, picked our crews up and went fishing. I rode for a little while and set up on a couple of places where we could get hit to learn how to deploy the lines and reel in the fish. After I thought they were ready I put them in the middle of a school. This situation is what I live for. Every rod bent over and the guys reacted brilliantly by reeling in their first fish each, grabbing the next one that was bent over and reeling it in. Within a minute we went from 0 to 8. We rebaited then did it again. By now Tony had got in the action and we started double teaming the school. I would loose them then Tony would find them. We hopscotched the school till both boats completely ran out of bait. We both went and caught more bait then I set up in an area that I knew we could catch larger fish. We worked it for about 45 minutes and limited out there. We were able to get off the water before it got too hot, an ending to a great day. They got to catch nice fish and I met some new friends. Tony had to stay out a little longer than us but they ended up with some beautiful fish.

A Hectic Sunday on the Lake

 Bob, Anthony, Kyle and Bobby
Mike, Jim, Chris, Carlos and Ron

Sunny and Hot, Water Temperature 85* and Clear
Tony and I both had clients today so we got on the water early and put 200 baits in each of our tanks. After picking up our clients Tony went his way and I went mine. Tony was fishing a spot and I was looking for schools. After 20 minutes of looking I found a school so we set up on them and caught about 15 Stripers real quick. I called Tony over to join in on the fun but he had an issue to deal with that delayed his crew about 30 minutes and by then the school had split up. Tony found a bunch of fish out in the main lake and called me to them but after he and I worked them for 45 minutes with only catching a couple keepers we abandoned them and looked for more. We both hit a few more places then I had to go catch more bait. I put 200 more baits in my tank, found a school and set up on them. Everything went off and for about an hour we worked the fish. Tony called and said he had got on to some fish but had run out of bait so we went to him and gave him some of our baits. We both fished there till Tony ran out of bait then he went to catch more. I made a little move and we put our downlines down deeper on some fish that I saw on my Lowrance. That was the best move of the day, we popped 5 or 6 Hogs real quick to finish the day. And what a day it was...Plenty of catching, plenty of issues on the boats and certainly plenty of boat traffic to complicate fishing. One of my clients ran a hook through my finger and one of Tony's clients had the runs. At the end of the day all was well and everyone caught a bunch of fish.

A Whole lot of Stripers

Dan and Guests Tony, Ethan, Pat, Greg, Scott, Tom, Buzzy, Stephan, Charlie, Chick and Fred
Sunny and Hot, Water Temperature 85* and Clear

Tony and myself got out very early this morning to catch bait for our clients. We met them at their dock
and six guys jumped on Tony's boat and six on mine and off we went looking for Stripers. We knew we had our work cut out for us today being a busy Saturday on the lake and wanted to put these guys on some nice Stripers. Well we earned our tips today, these guys 'Spanked' the Stripers and ended up with more than anyone could ask for. Tony and I worked together to insure both boats could keep their crews busy catching fish and after a hard days work our efforts were rewarded not only with a great stringer of Stripers but also a day of fun memories. Dan and his family will enjoy the fruits of Lake Anna tonight with some great table fare.

Some Happy Boys

James, Cayden and Ben
Sunny and Hot, Water Temperature 86* and Clear
Today was a fun day especially for me because there were three good boys who
enjoyed fishing as much as I do on the boat battling Stripers all morning long.
Cayden is holding his hand up because I asked them who caught the most
Stripers today he was proud to say he did. Although fishing pressure
was high as well as boat traffic heavy we found enough fish to
cooperate to give us a great day on the water with our sons.

Another Rockin Day

Sydney screaming "this fish is wiggling"!
DP's Clients Reina and Nigel

Sunny and Pleasant, water temperature 83* and Clear
Today DP and I both had clients so we got up early and filled our tanks up with bait then met everyone at daylight and went fishing. Our plan was for both of us to check out different areas and when one of us found a nice school we would call the other into it. I found what I wanted but just as I sat down to work it I saw another fisherman who had been watching us come to us on his big motor. I told my clients when this fisherman was 500 yards away that he would wait for us to stop then come right up to us. Well he did and started putting rods out so I just got back up and left him there. I headed down lake and before I got far DP called and said he found some fish so we went to him. When we got there he was set up fishing so I stopped a couple hundred yards away so I would not spook the school and put out our downlines. Before we knew it the bite was on. Everything we had out started going down and the same thing was going on in D's boat. Both boats worked the school for over an hour burning up about 300 baits and putting a lot of Stripers in the box. We both had to catch bait so we did then went our separate ways. DP only needed two more fish for a limit which only took a few more minutes then he came off the water. I went and hit a few different areas catching fish everywhere we went. We ended up using up all of our baits again then calling it quits for the day. Everyone had a ball today reeling in fish after fish. I have no idea exactly how many fish we caught but it was more than enough for everyone to handle. The guys thumbs were raw from handling Stripers and the girls tummies were red and sore from reeling in fish. Glad I am not cleaning all of those fish!

A slow Friday

Tim, Richard and John
Sunny and Pleasant, Water temperature 86* and clear.
Tony took his clients out today and worked hard to catch these fish.
We had a cold front pass through last night which slowed
fishing down today. I was out also and had similar results.
Tomorrow is another day, DP and Tony should
have a great day if the wind does not blow out of the East.

Banging the Stripers

Coin, Bruce, John, Brian and Ben
John and Grandson Colin with a couple nice one's
School of fish we worked first thing this morning

Great Structure Scan Shot. My sonar screen on the left shows something on the bottom, looks kinda like bait with a few fish mixed in with it. Looking at my down scan on the bottom right you can clearly see exactly what it is. This is an oak tree that was placed out in front of one of my clients dock in Contrary creek.

Sunny and Hot, Water Temperature 86* and Clear
Today shortly after picking my clients up I found a huge school of Stripers. I really did not want to put my clients on so many fish until they learned exactly how to put the baits down but how could I resist? We set up on them and banged them for about 45 minuets before loosing the school. What a way to start the morning off! We fished several different areas before coming in this morning before it got too hot. Ben caught the pig of the day.

A fruitful day on Lake Anna

 Floyd Furr and Pastor Mike
This is a pic of the first school of Stripers we hit early this morning.
This shot was taken at 10 mph but I had been running 25mph when I located a school right over the channel. The school of Stripers at that speed show up as tiny dots bunched up very tight.
This is another shot of what it looks like to locate Stripers while running about 25mph. I was running that fast on the left of the screen. Notice as I can up onto the 25 foot flat fish were all over the break and up on the edge of the flat. As I slowed the boat the archers get larger but when I am running fast they are smaller and bunched up more due to the amount of water I was covering. I simply turned the boat around, put the trolling motor in, put baits down at 22 feet and we rocked them. This is where we cought our largest fish of the morning along with a bunch of other keepers.

Sunny and Hot, Water temperature climbing up to 85* and Clear.
Today was a day of instruction. Floyd had been out with me before and wanted to get dialed in on reading his Lowrance, locating bait and schools of fish and setting up on and catching Stripers. When I got in his boat I had to completely change his settings on his unit just to read it at speeds over 5 mph. I didn't take long for him to see what he had been missing. By the end of the trip Floyd was convinced that he could go out and put Stripers in the boat. Today he went from  0 to a Hero in a couple hours and put more fish in the boat than they have all year. Floyd is a great listener and will do just fine out there on his own. He will be back out on his own on Thursday to prove it.

Happy Fathers Day

Paul, Gary, Greg, and Tim
Sunny and Pleasant, Water temperature 83* and Clear
Tony caught bait this morning then went to the marina to pick up his clients. He was quite surprised when a Limo Van pulled up and out popped these four guys. He thought to himself, "My God, I wonder who I have going out with me today". As it turns out Tim's wife Carla hired the Limo and bought the trip as a Fathers Day present for her husband and his friends. Great thought if they were going to drink on the boat today. Today's fishing was not as good as it has been lately, probably due to the full moon and cold front that came through yesterday. They only caught 40 to 50 Stripers. Never the less they had a ball and what a great way to celebrate Fathers Day.

For those Dad's who did not get what they want today treat yourself to a
charter fishing for Stripers on Lake Anna.     You won't regret it!
