Today DP and I both had clients so we got up early and filled our tanks up with bait then met everyone at daylight and went fishing. Our plan was for both of us to check out different areas and when one of us found a nice school we would call the other into it. I found what I wanted but just as I sat down to work it I saw another fisherman who had been watching us come to us on his big motor. I told my clients when this fisherman was 500 yards away that he would wait for us to stop then come right up to us. Well he did and started putting rods out so I just got back up and left him there. I headed down lake and before I got far DP called and said he found some fish so we went to him. When we got there he was set up fishing so I stopped a couple hundred yards away so I would not spook the school and put out our downlines. Before we knew it the bite was on. Everything we had out started going down and the same thing was going on in D's boat. Both boats worked the school for over an hour burning up about 300 baits and putting a lot of Stripers in the box. We both had to catch bait so we did then went our separate ways. DP only needed two more fish for a limit which only took a few more minutes then he came off the water. I went and hit a few different areas catching fish everywhere we went. We ended up using up all of our baits again then calling it quits for the day. Everyone had a ball today reeling in fish after fish. I have no idea exactly how many fish we caught but it was more than enough for everyone to handle. The guys thumbs were raw from handling Stripers and the girls tummies were red and sore from reeling in fish. Glad I am not cleaning all of those fish!

A slow Friday

Tony took his clients out today and worked hard to catch these fish. 

We had a cold front pass through last night which slowed 

fishing down today. I was out also and had similar results.

Tomorrow is another day, DP and Tony should 

have a great day if the wind does not blow out of the East.

Great Structure Scan Shot. My sonar screen on the left shows something on the bottom, looks kinda like bait with a few fish mixed in with it. Looking at my down scan on the bottom right you can clearly see exactly what it is. This is an oak tree that was placed out in front of one of my clients dock in Contrary creek.

Today shortly after picking my clients up I found a huge school of Stripers. I really did not want to put my clients on so many fish until they learned exactly how to put the baits down but how could I resist? We set up on them and banged them for about 45 minuets before loosing the school. What a way to start the morning off! We fished several different areas before coming in this morning before it got too hot. Ben caught the pig of the day.

A fruitful day on Lake Anna

 This is a pic of the first school of Stripers we hit early this morning.

 This shot was taken at 10 mph but I had been running 25mph when I located a school right over the channel. The school of Stripers at that speed show up as tiny dots bunched up very tight.

This is another shot of what it looks like to locate Stripers while running about 25mph. I was running that fast on the left of the screen. Notice as I can up onto the 25 foot flat fish were all over the break and up on the edge of the flat. As I slowed the boat the archers get larger but when I am running fast they are smaller and bunched up more due to the amount of water I was covering. I simply turned the boat around, put the trolling motor in, put baits down at 22 feet and we rocked them. This is where we cought our largest fish of the morning along with a bunch of other keepers.

Today was a day of instruction. Floyd had been out with me before and wanted to get dialed in on reading his Lowrance, locating bait and schools of fish and setting up on and catching Stripers. When I got in his boat I had to completely change his settings on his unit just to read it at speeds over 5 mph. I didn't take long for him to see what he had been missing. By the end of the trip Floyd was convinced that he could go out and put Stripers in the boat. Today he went from  0 to a Hero in a couple hours and put more fish in the boat than they have all year. Floyd is a great listener and will do just fine out there on his own. He will be back out on his own on Thursday to prove it.

Tony caught bait this morning then went to the marina to pick up his clients. He was quite surprised when a Limo Van pulled up and out popped these four guys. He thought to himself, "My God, I wonder who I have going out with me today". As it turns out Tim's wife Carla hired the Limo and bought the trip as a Fathers Day present for her husband and his friends. Great thought if they were going to drink on the boat today. Today's fishing was not as good as it has been lately, probably due to the full moon and cold front that came through yesterday. They only caught 40 to 50 Stripers. Never the less they had a ball and what a great way to celebrate Fathers Day.

A Busy Saturday Morning

Today being Saturday I knew the lake would be busy. What I was not expecting was when I arrived at the marina there was already a dozen Striper fisherman that had launched and were out catching bait. I caught bait then picked up my clients at their dock around 5:15. We then went looking for Stripers. After doing a mock set up to show them how to deploy the baits and how to reel in the Stripers we were ready to go for the big ones. We wanted to set up on big schools but every time I would stop other fisherman would swarm in like Bees on us spooking fish so I finally decided to locate smaller schools away from the view of other fisherman and the move paid off. We would fish till we got busted then move again and again. By 10 were were done and were ready to come off the lake. I dropped everyone off at their dock, cleaned my boat up while they filleted fish. What a great morning on the lake, Cool weather and Hot fishing.

Tony and I both had trips this morning so we caught bait, picked our clients up and went looking schools of Stripers. Tony went one way and I went the other. I set up on some  Stripers and we banged a few nice one before they moved on. Tony saw some bait and topped his tank off so he could be ready when we found the larger schools. I found a second school and went through all of our bait. Tony came over and picked up where I left off while I went and filled up my two tanks with fresh bait. After catching bait we found one more school. By now my crew knew exactly what to do and we wore them out. Tony's crew was dialed in by now also and they did the same. It was 9:30, the sun was coming out, it was getting hot and the pleasure boaters were all over the lake,and we were coming off the water. There must be a race or a show for speed boats this weekend, they are everywhere. Today between both boats we probably caught 150 to 175 fish and our clients went home with some good memories and some wonderful diner.

Today Tony and I had charters so we both hit the water at O dark thirty to fill our tanks up with bait. We had quite a light show with all the lightning in the sky this morning. The rain subsided and by 5:30 it had quit so we loaded the boats up with our clients and went looking for fish. I found a small school fairly quickly so we set up on them and popped 7 keepers by 6:15. I called Tony over but he wanted to set up on something else so he did not get into the action. We set up on several other schools catching punks and by 8 o'clock I had to go catch more bait. Tony had hit 4 or 5 different places catching punks , Catfish and only a couple keepers. I decided after catching bait to make a big move and went way downlake. We caught about 20 more Stripers and found some huge schools. Tony called and said he finally was catching some keepers so we decided to go back up toward him. We filled our tanks up and hit another area and caught another 15 Stripers. Meanwhile Tony went and refueled and caught more bait. About 15 minutes later he called and said come to him as quick as we could. Five minutes late we rounded the turn and saw 4 men hooked up with Tony having two nets in his hand landing the fish. By the time I put my trolling motor in the water and trolled over to him we watched them boat 13 more Stripers. They had gone from zero's to hero's very quickly and had limited out. My client Jim who has been going out with me forever watched Tony scrambling and giving orders while they were having all the action and said it is obvious who Tony learned from, he acted just like you do, and had the same results. Now it was our turn and within a couple minutes we caught another 15 to 20 Stripers and were out of bait. Today we caught fish everywhere Tony and I fished but many times the quality was not there. Patience paid off with some beautiful Stringers and happy Clients.

Angling Virginia

Today we were scheduled to shoot a show for television called Angling Virginia. I hit the water early to catch bait then picked everyone up at 5:45 and went in search of Stripers. I had invited VDGIF biologist John Odenkirk and one of my guides Brian Mohr to help me and Shane, the producer of the show, brought Wayne and Brian Oxidine to help film the show and reel in Stripers. Shane told me a couple days ago he needed about 30 minutes of recording for the show but after a morning of fishing he had well over 3 hours worth. He will have his work cut out for him editing down to 25 minutes for the show. We tried to get on film how I use my Lowrance to located bait and fish, how we catch Herring in the daylight hours, how I set up on fish and he also wanted to capture catching a few fish. I think he may have got more than he bargained for, we had quite a lot going on this morning and had a whole lot of fun. They got footage of chaos on the boat with too many fish hooked up. An especially good part was when Wayne  had a Striper pull the rod right out of his hands loosing the rod and reel then later we went back, found the Striper floating on the surface then netting it to retrieve my lost rod and reel. Shane also filmed quite a few Stripers coming in the boat. This should be a great show. The show is Angling Virginia, it airs June 7th till August 30th every Saturday morning at 8:30 on WRLH Fox 35 Richmond, which also is FIOS and Comcast channel 11. He also is posting it on websites. This particular show is airing on July 19th. Tune in to see what happens when you get a bunch of guys having fun Striper Fishing. I will keep everyone posted as the airing date of the show gets nearer. Shane is holding a stringer of a few of the Stripers we caught this morning.

A Good Morning of Catching

 This is a screen shot from this morning. You can see Stripers on the sonar but they really show up 40 to 80 feet out to the left of the boat on the side scan screen.

 These are much nicer Stripers all of which were keepers. Notice the size of the arches on the sonar compared to the upper screen shot on the sonar and down scan. The side scan clearly shows Stripers on both sides of the boat but larger fish are out 50 to 80 feet to the right of the boat. Naturally I steered the boat a little to the right and hooked up with better fish. This technology is SO good it is almost like cheeting!

I caught bait early this morning then picked my clients up at their dock at 5:45. I motored less than 1/2 mile and saw what I wanted so we set up on some Stripers. By 6:30 we had 14 keepers in the box and had released 20 others. We left that school, motored about 400 yards and found another. Set baits out and worked them again. After ten minutes I wanted to check some other areas out so we took off again but only made it about 1/4 mile before the screen lit up. We banged them again and limited out by 8:30. Today was all about the boys, they were cat fisherman and I told them before we left the dock I was going to convert them over to Stripers this morning. The youngest caught three Cats on our first set so I threatened to throw him over if he caught any more. That must had been the real deal because he caught only Stripers after that and ended up catching the largest fish of the morning. The boys did great this morning and should remember this trip for a long time.

Joe Baker's Birthday

Greg wanted to surprise his father Joe with a fishing trip as a Birthday present so he booked today to take him. I caught bait, picked the guys up and set up on a school of Stripers. I knew the school was mostly punks but I wanted to teach them how to deploy the baits and how to reel the fish in before putting them on larger fish. After catching about 15 Stripers some of them still were having trouble but I had to leave to find another school. I didn't go far and tripped over a school about 300 yards long. We set up on them and had fun reeling in fish after fish. We worked the school for an hour then I decided it was time to catch more bait and locate some other schools. We worked school after school throughout the day till we burnt up all of our baits and called it quits. Brad has had a house on the lake for 30 years and this was the first time that he had ever fished the lake. He has devoted most of his lake time to skiing and training. He is quite an accomplished Tri-Athlete, he travels around the country and to Hawaii to compete. As you can see he is getting a little age on him now and he is looking for another sport....Just kidding Brad. We had a fun today and hopefully Joe enjoyed celebrating some of his birthday on the water with friends and two sons.
