March 23, 2007: Sunny and warm, Water temp rising to 52* and stained. Caught bait early and started fishing points midlake. We caught a few punks and before we knew it boats were everywhere. Boat motors turned the fish off where we were fishing so I went to the other side of the lake and set up in a quite bay. We made one pass and put a fish in the boat so we circled around and worked this bay for the rest of the day. The fish never got going well because everytime we caught a fish other boats or guides would see us and spook the fish. We gave it our best shot and ended up catching 12 Stripers, clients keeping 7, largest 11.4 pounds.

March 21, 2007:

Cloudy and Cold, Water Temp 49* and Stained.

Got out early and caught Herring and met Richard at the dock at 6:30. Set up over 22' of water with 10 Boards and a Bobber pulling deeper flats and points since the cold front hit so hard last night. Before I got all the boards out we started getting hit. In the first hour we had over a dozen strikes then it slowed down some when the east wind starting blowing. We tried some shallow areas and put some baits up on the bank but the fish were hurt from the cold front and only hit over deeper water. We fish several different areas today but it seemed everywhere we fished we would get hit but never numerous strikes in any one area. We had 25 hits today and caught 14 Stripers, keeping 8 fish to take home . Once the lake warms just a little fishing is going to break loose.

March 15, 2007: Party cloudy and windy, Water temp 54* and clear.
Got on the water a 4am this morning to catch Herring and picked clients up at the dock at o dark 30. With today being pre-frontal of this big storm and knowing the temps were going to crash I set up in an area nearby where I caught fish yesterday but was deeper by 6 to 8 feet. Set out boards and pulled up to the first primary point and had two hits, turned back and went over the same point with no hits. I made 4 passes on the point and caught fish only pulling into the wind, not with the wind. Hit some other flats nearby but the fish only wanted to feed today on points. After 10 am the fish turned off just like the previous two days. After fishing hard in the wind we ended up getting 16 hits, clients keeping 9 Stripers, a Cat and a Crappie.

March 14, 2007: Sunny and warm, Water Temp 52* and Clear
Caught bait early and picked clients up before 7 . Went to where I fished yesterday and had so many strikes and set out my spread of 10 boards and a Bobber. Went a couple hundred yards without a strike and knew the fish had moved or were turned off. We hit a point and had 4 hits but only put one in the boat and the fish were only hitting the bait in the tail. We moved over to a bank where the wind had been blowing onto for 2 days and I put the baits right up on the bank and started catching fish. Only the boards that were nearest the bank would get hit. We had 23 Strikes before the fish turned off, due to all the boat traffic. Must have been 20 boats go by. Anyway, the wind picked up at noon and the fish would not feed anymore. We ended up the morning with 11 Stripers and 3 Catfish.

Sunny and warm,Water Temp. 50 and Clear

Picked clients up a 7am at HighPoint and ran to a 10'flat and put out 10 Planner Boards and a Bobber. We put out both Gizzards and Herring and before I could get all of them out the fish started nailing the baits. Our first fish was a nice Striper but it got caught up in another line and broke off right at the boat. Before I could bait up other boards started going off and in the first hour we had 11 hits. We had a couple of small fronts blow through today and the fish would feed prior to the fronts for a few minutes then shut down. We continued to work 10 foot flats all day and ended up getting 26 hits. One client today had trouble with touching the line every time he picked up the rod when a fish was on and lost at least 5 nice Stripers himself [Bruce, I won't mention your name]. Anyway, they all had fun and caught 16 Stripers and a Catfish. This was one of the first days the wind did not howl all day and allowed us to fish where we wanted to.

January 30, 2007 : Sunny and Cold, Water temp 41*
Got out on the water this morning before 5am to catch bait. Hung a lantern on a bridge to attract Herring and went to hit some lighted docks. On my first throw of the cast net the net froze to the side of the boat [14* this morning] . Next throw the net was frozen so it did not open properly. Ended up having to dip my net in the lake before every cast just to get the net to open. Moved back to the bridge to throw on my lantern and could not get my trolling motor to go into the water, it was compleatly frozen. After struggling to catch bait I picked my clients up and went just a short distance from the marina so they would not freeze in a long boat ride. I put out my spread [6 downlines , 6 planner boards and a bobber rigged with Herring and Threadfin Shad, running deep points with large schools of bait on them. We had 3 hits in the first 15 minutes, 2 on downlines and 1 on a board, without hooking up. After 5 more minutes we hooked up on a board with a Herring and bob caught a nice Bass, 8lbs 14ozs. Ran another 200 yards and caught a Striper and decided to go back to the marina to check the bass in for a Citation. Went uplake to fish an area I caught fish 2 days before but the water temperature had fallen 3 * and all the bait we saw was in the channel. We fished it anyway due to the depthfinder showing so many fish but could not get any strikes. I decided the water temp. was too cold so we ran back downlake till we found the water temp. at 45* and put the spread out over some 20'flats. We started getting hits and within the next 2 hours boated some nice fish. Ended up the day having only 14 strikes catching 2 Stripers and 6 Bass. Although Bob got a Citation for his 8.14, we missed out on 2 more Citations by 1/4 and 3/4 of an inch. After measuring the Bass I told Tom his fish was too short for a Citation, he commented "I 've been told all my life I was a little too short'.

January 23, 2007: Sunny and cold, Water 45* and clear.
Caught Herring at daylight and started looking for fish at the Splits. Saw a few groups of Stripers around bait at 25' so we put out 8 downlines in their face but the fish were reluctant to hit. After fishing them for 30 minutes we put out planner boards and a bobber, running 14 lines covering from top to bottom. Worked the area for 2 hours catching only 1 Striper and a 2 pound crappie so we picked up and went further uplake . We located an area of about 10 acres that was solid bait and fish so we put out the spread and worked them for the rest of the morning. The Stripers were very lethargic and we only could catch 6 this morning, maybe due to the cold front and the bluebird skies. We kept 5 Stripers for dinner and the freezer.

January 12, 2007: Rain and Cold, Water Temp 45*
Ran uplake and started pulling herring on boards and downlines over 20' flats and working up onto 8' flats. Worked from the 522 bridge on the Anna arm down one side to Holiday Mill Bridge, up into Christoper Run and all the way back up to the 522 Bridge again on the other side of the lake. We had 14 hits today, all on boards, clients keeping 6 Stripers. Spoke to 2 other fisherman today on the radio, they catching only 1 fish between them. Hopefully the weather will straighten out and the fish will turn on. We saw fish all day long on the depth finder and could not get them to bite.

12/28/06: Sunny and 55*, Water temp 47* and stained.
Caught Herring early and picked clients up at High Point Marina. Started off at the State Park running 4 downlines , 8 planner boards, a bobber and a free line. Ran 30' flat and worked up to the 10' flat at Jett's and then across to pea hill, only to catch 2 Bass. Relocated up above Hunters and put out the same spread, and proceeded to work the flats and points going up. The channels were full of fish and bait, but would not cooperate. After noon we started getting short strikes and managed to catch a few. We ended up the day with 6 Stripers, 4 Bass and a white perch. Today was just one of those days the fish stayed in the channels and would not come out and feed.

Nov. 31, 2006: Sunny and 75*, Water temp 55* and stained.
Picked clients up at 6am and went uplake to catch big Gizzard shad. Caught 40 nice shad and set up on 10'flats with boards and freelines. Ran a mile of flats and points with only 2 hits so we pulled our lines in and relocated to 20' flats and 10' humps and started getting hits. Fish were not real aggressive in the morning but as the water warmed up so did the fishing. We continued to pull the humps and points and on every pass we would get strikes. By the end of the day we had 22 solid hook ups and clients kept 13 Stripers for 75 pounds and 85 year old Jim Sr. caught a beautiful citation Bass to climax a wonderful day.
It appears the Stripers are just starting to feed up for the winter now and are about a month behind their normal feeding patterns. There should be Great fishing for Stripers in the upcoming month.

November 24, 2006: Sunny and chilly, Water temp 50* and muddy.
Picked clients up at their dock and set up on a long, shallow flat running planner boards with big Gizzard shad. The water was in very poor shape after yesterdays hard rains and winds. Water clarity was poor. Stripers were not cooperative due to the Bluebird skies and the barometer spiking. After only a couple strikes on the flat we pulled off to deeper water and located plenty of fish in 20' of water. We put 6 downlines on them in addition to the 8 boards and bobber trying to get the fish to hit.
We also tried several other areas locating numerous schools of Stripers but the fish did not want to eat. We ended up catching a few Stripers on Planner boards over 40' of water [go figure]. We gave it our best shot and boated 5 Stripers for the day.

Nov. 19, 2006: Sunny and cold, Water Temp 54* and muddy.
Picked clients up and went uplake to catch Gizzards. The lake was high and muddy due to the high winds and rain from this week. Ran Planner boards and free lines over 10' flats today. Tried other depths and saw lots of fish in the 15 to 20' ranges but only got hits over 10' flats. Had 15 strikes today and clients kept 8 Stripers. Can't wait for the lake to get back to normal pool and clear up so we can fish where the big 'uns are.

Nov. 11, 2006: Sunny and warm, Water temp 55* and stained
Got a late start and had a little trouble catching bait . Set up on the same area that we ran yesterday and pulled boards over the flat next to the channel. Saturday boat traffic was horrible with the holiday and 79* temps. Before we made our first pass 20 boats had run over the flat and spooked the fish. We found the school in 22' of water but they would not rise on the boards so we put downlines on them and still could not get hit. We fished the area hard for just a couple of hits and moved to find an area with less boat traffic. Fished a 22' flat with no luck and looked for other schools for 2 hours but went back to where we started the day . We put boards out again and got hit on every pass until a boater saw us catching fish and moved right in on the spot , spooking the fish. We ended up with 15 hits, clients keeping 6 fish. Although the days fishing was slow Brock and his Dad had a ball.

Nov. 10, 2006: Sunny and warm, Water temp 54* and stained
Picked clients up at 6 and ran up lake to catch Gizzards for bait. Set up on a long flat nearby a 30' channel and pulled boards over it until the boat traffic pushed the fish off the flat. Had 10 hits in the first hour on boards but when we pulled off the flat I left 8 boards out and put down 6 downlines to cover all the water column. The fish cooperated even with the excessive boat traffic today and we caught Stripers on downlines as well as freelines. We had 30 hits this morning , clients keeping 16 fish and we were off the water by noon.

Picked clients up at the marina and went uplake to catch bait. Due to the front the lake was a sheet of mud where I had been fishing so we tried an area below where the water was just stained but had no success. Move further downlake where the water was a little clearer and set up on a long point. Put out boards and free lines and pulled the point but the leaves kept fowling the boards making it very difficult to work the area. Kept the boards out and also put out downlines running 14 lines at a time trying to make the fish bite. Fishing was slow but we were able to get 14 to bite and clients kept 7 Stripers for the day.

Oct.27, 2006: Rain and 50*, Water Temp 58*
Picked clients up at the dock and went and threw for big Gizzards. Caught enough to get started and put out boards and a bobber to run some shallow flats and points on the main channel. Wasn't but 15 minutes and we started getting hits and the action never slowed down until we ran out of bait at 1 o'clock. Went and caught more bait and went downlake and put out boards over 25' flats with long points coming out to the channel. Had some nice fish here also but the weather turned cold and the guys were ready to go in after raining all day long. We ended up the day having 24 hits catching 12 very nice Stripers and 5 Catfish.

Checked a half dozen places for bait this morning with poor success. Finally caught enough to get started and put out a spread over main lake points . Hit one point that fish were moving up and down on and had hits about every pass for a couple hours. Went and spent 3 more hours catching bait and hit deeper points and humps midlake and caught the larger fish. There is a major front moving in tonight and fishing should improve tommorow.

Picked clients up at the dock at 6:30 and started the search for bait. Looked deep for Gizzards for 40 minutes but with the front passing through the bait had moved so we went shallow to find them. After throwing for 3 1/2 hours we put out planner boards rigged with big Gizz and ran flats on or near main lake points. We hit 2 or 3 points and flats before we found one with fish that wanted to feed and started getting hits on every pass. The Stripers were moving up on it to feed and pulling right back off of it. We ran the same flat for 4 hours . The Stripers were all about the same size [5 to 6 pounds] and would hit our offerings about once every 15 minutes. Matt and his sons had a great day and enjoyed fishing on the lake that they are helping to develop[Matt is developing the new community "Cutalong"at the intersection of Routes 208 and 652]. We had 17 hits today and boated 10 Stripers. Looks like the fish are starting the fall feeding blitz and fishing should be great from here on out.

Threw for 3 hours this morning trying to catch baits . A major front moved through last night and repositioned the bait and the fish. We started out runing flats but had no luck and kept seeing the fish stacked over the channels so we put out downlines in addition to runing boards and ran depths from 30 ' down to 5 ' and still could not score. We fished 3 different areas and Chance finally caught a Striper over 23' of water on a board. Fished for a couple more hours and Herb caught one just at the end of the day. We fished hard all day and at times had 14 lines out for only 2 strikes. Although fishing was tough today the guys stayed optimistic and had a good time.

Picked clients up at the dock at 6:30 and went in search of bait. On the way out I was thinking what a day this will be {a major cold front moved in last night and the temp dropped 30* since yesterday}. It didn't take long to confirm my fears after hitting 15 spots for bait we decided to start fishing at 9:30, 3 hours throwing for 25 baits. Anyway we ran boards and downlines today, only getting 10 hits, catching 3 Stripers, 3 Cats and the largest Bass Pete has ever caught. It rained 3 1/2 inches while we were out and the wind only got up to 25 miles an hour. I overheard Pete say on the way in" $210 for airfair from Chicago, picking Jim up at the airport and a 2 hour ride to the lake, $350 for a Fishing trip, $15 for beer, rain and wind pounding through 3 layers of clothing and rain gear and still getting soaked to the bone, Fishing License $15. Picked clients up at dock and went uplake to catch bait. Was very concerned about the day due to a cold front moving in last night. Bait collection was poor, took an hour and a half to catch enough bait to get started. Ran a flat with boards and hung a nice one but it ended up breaking the line. Caught a punk and released it then decided that I had to put the baits right in the fishes face to get them to hit so I converted to downlines and we started to get bit. The cold front hurt us today but we had 9 hits, caught 6 Stripers, a couple of cats and an Osprey . After being on the boat all day with Eddie at the end of the day I found out he was best friends with my brother that passed away a few years ago. What a small but wonderfull world we live in.

Picked clients up at High Point Marina at 6:30 am and ran uplake to catch bait . Caught about 40 gizzards and herring and hit a 15' flat getting 3 hits and boating all the Stripers. Wanted to run larger baits so I went to another area , found some schooling Gizzards, threw the net 2 times and caught about 50 larger Shad. Relocated on another 15 foot flat and ran planner boards with the larger gizz and within 10 minutes of putting the baits out we had 4 hits and boated 3 more Stripers. The boys did great and naturally caught the largest fish of the day. Clients had 15 hits today, kept 8 nice Stripers and a few cats. Looks like the boys will become great fisherman.

Picked up Brian early and took him uplake to catch bait, John and his Dad would be a little late today. Caught bait easily and ran boards on a 15' flat with no success. Picked up other two clients and set up on a flat that I fished yesterday morning where we caught 5 Stripers and ran it with no luck. Was a bright and full moon last night and I thought it would make things tough today but no hits? Pulled up and hit a deeper flat nearby and poped 1 Striper in 16' on a board so I held that depth and ran the contour , hooking up with a couple other nice Stripers. The fish seemed to want the larger Gizzard but I only had a few. Fished 4 other flats with no luck and ended up with 4 Stripers and a couple of Cats.

Picked up clients early and went out to catch bait. Found some fish breaking around daylight and worked them for awhile but they were punks. Set up on a flat nearby and ran boards and bobbers. Made 6 passes on the flat and caught fish every pass. Ran out of bait and had to catch more then set up on a 20' flat I fished the day before. The wind was blowing and did not catch fish right away but kept working until we located the fish. And Boy did we ever. Everyone caught plenty of fish and the Boys expecially had a ball. Naturally the boys caught the largest with Keith catching a 32 inch Striper. Clients ended up keeping 14 beautiful Stripers for 73 pounds.

Picks clients up at High Point at 6 and caught bait. Started out running boards on a 10 foot flat with only 2 hits. Moved out to a 20 foot flat and ran planner boards and downlines and started catching Stripers. Checked out a couple of more 20' flats until I hit the right one. I knew we had found some nice fish when the Stripers started hitting the Yellow Bird Planner Boards, not the bait I was running. We had 1 fish hit the board 4 times before it finally took the bait. We had 15 hits today and clients kept 8 fish. The fish seemed healthy for this time of year. I have been off the water for awhile rigging my new boat and this was a great way to break it in.

July 27,2006 : Sunny and Very Hot, Water Temp 88*

Caught bait easily this morning and picked clients up before daylight and hit the water early to beat the heat. Checked 30 to 40 foot flats from the splits down to Dike 2 and didn't see a fish, Came back up and went up a creek and located a school in a major channel bend and put downlines on them and started getting hits although most fish that would bite were small. The school moved on to the next channel bend and we started catching nicer fish. After 40 minutes we lost that school and we looked for 2 more hours until we found some fish in 22'. We worked them for a while then moved on. The fish today just didn't want to eat. We had close to 200 hits, caught 15 Stripers, a dozen Cats, 3 Bass and a 10 pound Carp.

Picked clients up this morning at 4 am at High Point. [Client wanted to experience catching bait ] Started looking up from the marina for schools with limited success. Tried a few but couldn't get hit so I decided to look on deeper flats. Found a couple of nicer schools but the fish had lockjaw. Kept looking and found a monster school, put downlines on them and encouraged a few fish to hit, The first fish my client caught was the largest he had ever caught. Although the school was moving fast, I kept up with it for a mile for some great action. Probably a trip that father and daughter will never forget.

Picked clients up and went up lake to locate schools of Stripers. Found our first school in 25' of water and broke the crew in on how to catch Stripers on down lines. The fish stayed fairly shallow today but moved quickly as always. We worked 4 schools within sight of each other catching fish in every one. We saw a fish bust a Gizzard on the surface soI picked up a pencil popper and on my second cast a 13 pounder jambed it . I handed the rod to a client and he wrestled the hog to the boat. Fish quit bitting at 11 but not after going through 200 baits. Clients kept 15 nice Stripers for the day.

Caught bait easily this morning and picked clients up at High Point at daylight. Cruised for 10 minutes and located some breaking fish but could not put anything together so we left to find another school. Got into a school in 28' of water and lost 2 nice fish right out of the box but also caught a couple . Hit a few more schools but the bite was slow. Decided to leave that area and relocate to a new area, found a school and caught a few and lost a few more. Eventually found a nice school and 5 lines hooked up at once but we lost3 of them. Had 75 hits today, mostly cats with clients keeping 10 Stripers and 6 Cats.

Caught Herring easily this morning[2 casts ] , picked up clients at 5:30 and went in search of a school of Stripers. Haven't been on the water in 9 days [went on a bike trip with friends] so I did not know what to expect. Found a school in 35' of water and put downlines baited with herring on them and caught a couple before the school vanished. Found another school and put downlines on them but they moved off quickly also. Repeated this drill 4 or 5 more times, getting on decent schools but the fish not eating properly or simply moving off. With the water temp rising up to 90 I figured the fish were lethargic and had to do something different so I decided to go catch some Gizzard Shad. On the first throw I lost a $100 net. Bummer. Anyway I caught some big shad and went and found 2 more schools of fish. Got plenty of small fish and Cats but just could not put decent fish in the boat. I finally made one last move to a spot and put a 7 pounder in the boat , put a 10" Gizz on a line and Guess What? Senior let Jeff reel in a fish cause Jeff had not caught a fish in 20 minutes and it happened to be a 38 1/2" Striper. The fish weighed 18 pounds and qualified to be a Va. Citation. Seniors good deed got his picture along side of Jeff's with the fish.

Motorcycle Trip

July 9th thru July 15 , 3 days of rain and 4 days of Sun and all days or fun
Took off fishing for a week to go on a bike trip with some friends. We stayed in the mountains traveling through West Va. , Ohio, Tenn. , Kentucky and North Carolina.
Had a great time and did some radical driving on mountian roads and saw a part of the country that was beautiful.

Caught bait easily this morning[100 in one cast] and picked clients up at the dock at 5:30 am. Looked for 10 minutes and found a small school of fish and put downlines on them. Caught a couple and moved and found another school and did the same. A friend Dwayne called me over to a small school he was working and we put a few more Stripers in the boat but the Buzzards [So called fisherman who just sit and wait for me to find the schools then barge right in on us] moved in on us and spooked that school. We hit a couple of more small schools until I found a large school in the mouth of a large cove and all our lines went off until, you guessed it, theBuzzards moved in again and spooked the school. I had enough of that B.S. so I picked up and went into a creek where they could not find us , found a large school and caught 40 fish out of it. Went and caught more bait and located another school and caught fish until we were busted again and had to leave. By the end of the day, We worked over 10 schools of Stripers, had over 400 hits, Yea 400, Clients caught over 100 Stripers and a dozen Catfish. July 6, 2006 : Cloudy and Rain, Water temp 82*

Caught bait in the rain this morning and picked clients up at High Point at 5:30 am and went in search of Stripers. Didn,t have to look far before I found a small school to break my clients in on . After schooling the guys on what to do I put them on a nicer school in 32' of water and they began to have some fun. The guys kept trying to teach Tyler how to fish but after Tyler put the first 4 fish in the boat Dad and the 2 uncles realized maybe they better get with the program. The schools of Stripers were moving fast this morning and I had to run and gun to keep up with them. Uncle Tim finally caught on after we hit a few schools and it wasn't long before we caught 30 Stripers along with a few Cats. Clients kept 20 nice Stripers and we were off the water by 10 am. Another good morning of fishing on Lake Anna. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TYLER

July 4th, 2006 : Sunny and Hot, Water temp 85*

Caught bait early, picked up clients and began the search for schools of Stripers. We had planned only to fish a few hours this morning due to it being a holiday and boat traffic being hatefull. After yesterday I was reluctant to go this morning because the schools of Stripers had been broken up by all the traffic of the last 3 days. I looked uplake from the marina for an hour and saw nothing to set up on so I decided to move downlake to deeper flats and had simular luck. We set up on a small school and caught a couple of Stripers but the cats were eating us up so we left and went back up. Found some very small schools and caught some singles but just could not put much together today. Clients had 60 hits, caught 10 Stripers and a dozen Stripers with Dillon catching this nice 9 pounder.

July 3, 2006 : Partly cloudy, Water temp 84*

Caught 210 Herring and picked up my clients at the dock at 5:40 [Doug was late] and went looking for schools of Stripers. Found numerous smaller schools , catching a few fish here and there. I'm sure the schools of Stripers were confused due to so much boat traffic this weekend. After looking in 30' areas I moved to shallower flats and started to mark larger schools. Only problem was that everytime I sat up on a school and put downlines on them We would look up to see 4 or 5 other boats on top of us. After a couple of hours of that I ditched all the boats and found 2 Schools of fish in 40' of water and "wore them out". Clients caught 35 Stripers and kept 20 Stripers for a great mornong of fishing.
